NORWAY: last Gaula river salmon fishing report

ere the last fishing report from Atlantic salmon fishing in Gaula river in Norway. "The fishing on the entire river and as well on our Beats is still challenging these days, but our fishermen are still fishing hard and some are being rewarded with beautiful fish, like angler Bernd Kuleisa on our Beat B1. After an exiting fight he was able to land a superb male fish of 10,2 kg (22,5 lbs). Bernd had to keep it, as the fish was bleeding badly and could not be revived. Werner Steinsdorfer from Germany also had luck on his side! He landed a nice salmon of 8.6 kg (19 lbs). The fish had serious injuries on the fins and also on the scales; so Werner thought that it might be an escaped farm fish, and therefore he kept it – scale samples have been sent to the authorities, so we should know more about it in a short time. Two days later Werner was lucky again and caught and released another nice fish estimated to weigh about 6 kg (13lb). Ralph Warnke caught another big fish on Beat B2, which he estimated to weigh about 10 kg (22 lb). Ralph was fishing on his own, so we do not have a picture as he released his salmon carefully.

IRELAND: big northern pike caught

Fishing guide Didier Martin sent us some info about his pike fishing in Ireland:" I want to introduce myself, my name is Didier and I’m a French fishing guide at Castle Hamilton, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, Ireland and I just like to show you my latest fish  a nice 118 cm pike I caught the lure surface in the Castle River close to Castle Hamilton in the last week. The two anglers who were with me took a quick photo and remarked that the Pike jumped five feet during the fight to the boat. They believe that the images will be engraved forever in their memories. After having admired the beautiful fish, it was quickly returned to it’s natural habitat. In the meantime, who knows another fisherman as lucky as me, can treasure such a fish. I hope I can complete photo album with more big pike!"

CANADA : Brithis Columbia 1000 pound sturgeon

This week a  record 1000 pound white sturgeon sturgeon was caught by a group of anglers on the Fraser River in Brithish Columbia. The group was on a team building fishing trip with a local fishing guiding cnear Chilliwack. The angler Norman Daley hooked the monster sturgeon which weighed five times more than him.

The whitesturgeon was 11 feet and 8 inches long and had a massive 5 foot girth tape measured below the pectoral fins. Although impossible to weigh fish in the river based on its measurements charts indicate that the sturgeon caught would weigh surely more than 1.000 pounds.

After 50 minutes fighting the sturgeon was brought to shore by the boat’s lead guide Jeff Welch of Great River Fishing Adventures. The crew scanned the fish to find it had not been previously tagged. It was dubbed a "virgin sturgeon," an untagged fish.

"That thing was huge! In the first three minutes I had it on the line I thought my arms were going to fall off. Or I would end up in the river,” explained Norman Daley, Managing Partner of Daley & Company Chartered Accountants. “Managing that fish became a true team effort. About 15 - 20 minutes into the battle I handed the rod off to my colleague. Then after another 15 minutes he handed it back. There was no way that one person alone was going to get that fish to the boat. It was truly a team effort."

It was just two months ago on July  when Great River Fishing Adventures made international news headlines when British tourists Michael and Margaret Snell caught a 12,4 feet sturgeon on the Fraser River. Charts indicate that it weighed 1,100 pounds. It was released after it was tagged and photographed.

USA: 700 pound marlin off Massachusset coast

As recently published on "On The Water Magazine", a big blue marlin estimated at lest 700 - 750 pounds was landed out of Falmouth in Massachusetts. Angler Larry Backman landed this nice blue marlin while fishing out of Falmouth earlier this September, and it took more than one hour and half  to land it.

MEXICO: huge 427 pounder yellowfin tuna

Guy Yocom landed a monster 427 pounder yellowfin tuna, that should break the IGFA all-tackle record , set just two years ago, when angler Mike Livingston landed a monster 405 lb tuna. He was fishing off  Cabo San Lucas coast in Mexico.

According to "Sport Fishing" magazine, Guy Yocom, owner of the boat, El Suertudo, or “the lucky one,” caught the tuna on a Mustad Demon Perfect Circle hook. As his boat name suggests, he was lucky enough to have entered himself into the Mustad ”Hook A Million” world-record contest. The contest promises to award anyone who catches an IGFA all-tackle world record fish on a Mustad hook $1 million dollar.

Now, Mr.Yocom has only to wait the fina decision of IGFA. The previous potential $ 1.000.000 fish (a sea bass) was disqualified because it was landed on an "Alabama Rig". That angler is still fighting that decision. But Yocom’s fish looks to be clear of any potential snags. If the scales are certified, not only does he have the biggest tuna ever caught, he has a million dollars!!

IGFA: Hot Cathes News September 2012

The end of the year is just around the corner, and world record-seeking anglers have their eye on the 2013 "I.G.F.A. World Record Game Fishes" book. Some of the record hopefuls that have submitted applications to the IGFA this month may see their name in the next edition of the annual publication, but because the cut-off date for the annual world record cycle is August 15th for catches made in the United States and July 15 for catches made internationally, many will be hoping their potential records, if approved, will stand until the 2014 book.

Angler Dr. Martin Arostegui, IGFA Trustee and Lifetime Achiever, recently made the best of the hot summer cubera snapper (Lutjanus cyanopterus) bite in his backyard of Miami, Florida, USA. While fishing with Capt. Bouncer Smith on August 31, 2012, Arostegui pulled up a 124 cm. cubera after it crushed the lobster being used for bait and put up an exhausting 25 minute fight. Once the fish was boated, it was quickly measured, photographed, and released alive. This fish qualifies Arostegui for the potential new "All-Tackle Length" record, which is currently vacant for this species.

Sherrell Carter of Duluth, Georgia, USA, has held the women’s 2 kg (4 lb) line class record for dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) since 2009. Carter decided to try her luck with 1 kg (2 lb) line on August 25, 2012, when a big dolphin entered the spread off Pinas Bay, Panama. Under the guidance of Capt. Yoan Alcala, Carter pitched a ballyhoo to the dorado and was instantly hooked up. After a quick five minute fight, the gaffs were sunk and the fish was boated. Back at the docks, the fish tipped the scales at 20.35 kg (44 lb 1 oz), qualifying Carter for the potential women’s 1 kg (2 lb) line class record. The current IGFA record is 18.37 kg (40 lb 8 oz).

Bob Gaines spent time this summer away from his California home to target freshwater species in Alaska’s Kenai River. While fly casting the Kenai on August 23, 2012, Gaines hooked into a beautiful pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) after it hit his pink polar shrimp fly. Ten minutes later, Gaines landed the fish and took the necessary photos and measurements before releasing it alive. Measuring out to 67 cm, Gaines’ fish qualifies him for the potential new "All-Tackle Length" record. The current IGFA record stands at 65 cm.

Dr. Mark Hatton recently traveled from his home inWest Milford, New Jersey, USA to Canada’s Northwest Territories to target the variety of freshwater species the area has to offer. While fly casting a pink fly in the Nanook River on July 30, 2012, Hatton came tight with a beautiful Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). After a 30 minute fight, Dr. Hatton boated and quickly released the fish after taking the necessary photos and measurements. Taping out to 86 cm on his Official IGFA Measuring Device, Hatton’s char qualifies for the new potential All-Tackle Length record, as the category is currently vacant.

Angler Peter Morse took advantage of the southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) bite off Narooma, Australia this past season, landing an 18.5 kg (40 lb 12 oz) fish on fly while fishing with Capt. Benn Boulton on June 26, 2012. The tuna ate a deceiver fly and put up a strong 13 minute fight before being landed. Morse’s fish qualifies him for the men’s 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record, which currently stands at 9.8 kg (21 lb 9 oz).

Angler Angelo Ruvioof North Haledon, New Jersey, USA landed a massive great northern tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) while fishing Poorman’s Canyon off the coast of New Jersey on August 8, 2012. Ruvio was fishing with Capt. Jason Kim and needed 10 minutes to boat the fish after it hit the squid he was soaking on the bottom. Tipping the scales at 29.57 kg (65 lb 3 oz), Ruvio’s catch qualifies him for the potential All-Tackle record. The current IGFA record stands at 28.8 kg (63 lb 8 oz).

Aussie angler Steve Starling was fly fishing in Australia’s Darwin Harbour on June 17, 2012 when a 16 kg (35 lb 4 oz) talangqueenfish (Scomberoide scommersonianus) exploded on the clouser he was casting. After a brutal 35 minute fight, Starling had the fish boated and was headed back to the docks with his potential men’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet class record. The current IGFA record is 9.45 kg (20 lb 13 oz).

Angler Marc Towers traveled to Ghana from his home in the United Kingdom to target some of the diverse freshwater species found in this country. On March 29, 2012, while casting a Mepps black flurry lure from the banks of Lake Volta, Towers hooked into something big. After a quick seven minute fight, Towers had landed a 12.93 kg (28 lb 9 oz) North African tigerfish (Hydrocynus brevis). This toothy critter qualifies Towers for the potential new All-Tackle record, which currently stands at 5.67 kg (12 lb 8 oz).

Papua New Guinea is a small island nation that is home to some very big fish, as native angler Jason N. Yip knows very well. Fishing the Kumimaipa River on July 30, 2012, Yip hooked into a monster of a Papuan black snapper (Lutjanus goldiei) that tipped the scales at 20.87 kg (46 lb). Yip’s potential All-Tackle record ate a Rapala Shad Rap lure and fought for 10 minutes before it was landed. After taking the necessary photos and measurements, Yip released the fish alive to grow even bigger.  The current IGFA record is 19.2 kg (42 lb 5 oz).

VIDEO: striped marlin and an Alabama Rig

Here a new cool underwater video of a striped marlin smacking a bait of a saltwater Alabama rig

USA: monster striped bass world record

Angler Greg Myerson must know a thing or two about big striped bass. Myerson holds the I.G.F.A. all-tackle world record for striped bass for his monster 81 pound striped bass  caught off Connecticut in 2011. But now Myerson has apparently doubled down, this because he now holds the I.G.F.A. All-tackle length record for striped bass, too!!

Here is the story that appeared on  thefisherman.com:
"The I.G.F.A. has recently approved the submission for the new "all tackle length record" for striped bass. The huge fish, which measured 113 centimeters (44 inch), was landed back on May 30 th by Greg Myerson. Greg was fishing 6 Mile Reef off Westbrook, CT, USA, when he made the big fish. ."

CALIFORNIA: white shark hooked from a pier

Recently very few anglers in the world have the luck to fight a  white shark and especially fishing from an US pier. But, earlier this week, Eric Martin on the Manhattan Beach Pier in Southern California, hooked, fought and released a 9 foot great white shark.

The news appeared on Patch.com and Eric Martin said "The shark was an estimated 8 or 9 feet". Eric is a  marine biologist and director of "The Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium" located at the end of the MB Pier … "

"Martin said he was pleased to be able to capture the quintessential shark shot: one in which its mouth is wide open. He was able to gauge the shark's size when it passed under a swimmer, who was about 6-7 feet.

'The shark went under the swimmer said Martin, and he had no idea the shark swam underneath him. He kept right on swimming.'

USA: giant 917 pound mako shark off California coasts

Angler Craig Winters and his friend Brian Cope were fishing aboard a 37 foot charter boat out of Mako Matt's Marine in Huntington Beach, California. While chumming for sharks off South Orange County, they caught a few small blue sharks and chummed in great white then a giant mako grabbed the big bait.

After a llong 4 hour battle, the mako shark was too large to bring aboard so it was towed back to port where it tipped the scales at 917 pounds (415 kilos).

While far larger than the 150 to 450 pound average size mako caught off southern California, Winters’ fish falls short of the current California State Record, a 1,098-pound, 12-ounce shortfin mako caught by angler Sean Gizatullin off Anacapa Island, Ventura County. The current IGFA World Record is a 1,221-pounder caught off Chatham , Massachusetts, USA.

USA: Florida swordfish frenzy

In all the Florida Keys seem to be experiencing the year of the swordfish fishing. In the past March, anglers weighed in a 520 pound  swordfish. In April, that was topped by a 685 pounder. In July, Captain Vic Gaspeny caught his 200th swordfish and at the end of a 460 pound swordfish became the largest caught by a charter boat out of the famed "Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada".

Recently comes a report that fellow editor and TV host George Poveromo and his crew hooked 6 nice swordfish in three days this week. Fishing at more than 1500 feet the crew landed fishes from 175 to 380 pound.  Thi last fish come upafter a seven-hour fight that covers over 25 miles from hookup to landing. The big swordfish was fought on the Penn stand up outfit spooled with 80-pound-test Sufix 832 line. Poveromo said the fish was "tailwrapped" during the last hour and unfortunately came up dead.

ALASKA: 264 pound halibut at the Valdez Halibut Derby

Angler Calvin Carr traveled to Valdez om Alaska, and the trip was worth it. He landed a 264-pound halibut to win the annual fishing tournament the: "Valdez Halibut Derby" and its prize of $15,000

Carr luckily hooked into the fish just minutes before the captain he was with, Dennis Petre, was ready to pull up anchor and head back to the port of Valdez. After landing small fishes, this one took Carr 35 to 40 minutes to land, and bested the second place fish by more than 30 pounds. As for what he’s doing with the money, Calvin said: “I don’t know yet; my mind’s on moose camp right now!"
