AUSTRALIA: caught a giant size souther bluefin tuna

While fishing  in South Australia, Karen Wright caught a southern bluefin tuna Wednesday that weighed more than 316 pounds - 143 kilos

It took Wright 35 minutes to land the leviathan, which comes close to the current largest southern bluefin tuna on the record books with the IGFA (International Game Fish Association - www.igfa.org)

That record tuna weighed just more than 369 pounds and was harvested near Tathra, Australia back in  2009.

Here in Australia it is absolutely illegal for recreational anglers to sell their catches so Wright distributed the fish among her friends and family. If sold could have made a cool $4,500.

BERMUDA: small fry record for a 336 lb marlin

UK: caught a 200 plus pound skate ray from the shore

While fishing in Scotland, a young fisherman  landed what is being hailed as the biggest fish ever caught from British shores, an estimated 200+ lb common skate ray.

Daniel Bennett,  was fishing the northern tip of the Isle of Skye in Scotland with a group of fishermen from "The Whitby Bass Club" when a huge fish ate his mackerel bait.

He needed over two hour battle before lift the huge fish on the rock for measurements; so the weight can be calculated in 208 lb. This fish 66.75 inches wide and 88.25 inches long.

Fortunately, Bennett  released it alive back into the water, as the common skate is a critically endangered species. So this fish can't be appreved as an official UK record; in fact  a fish to become a record, it has to be weighed and that would mean killing the fish, which for obvious reasons was avoided in this case.

USA: kayak fishing for American paddlefish

An interesting kayak fishing video by angler Rober Field.

He travel to a remote stretch of the Arkansas River in Northern Oklahoma as target the elusive and  North American paddlefish (spoonbill).
Every year around March, these fish leave their usual home in the depths of various lakes to begin a journey upriver to spawn. These behemoths become concentrated as they try to squeeze through narrow stretches of the river, which makes for a much easier target for anglers looking for a rush.

American Paddlefish are filter feeders, and because of this, they will not take a bait or bite a lure.
In order to catch them, we have to snag them. Paddlefish are illegal to snag for in most states because they have become endangered in most regions.

COSTA RICA: 34 blue marlin in one day!!

Here an interesting fishing report from from Capt. Josh Temple along with his team fishing off  Los Suenos, Costa Rica:

"We've just returned from perhaps the most incredible five day trip that we will ever experience in our lives. We managed to release 122 marlin in five days of fishing.

On June 30th we arrived at our destination, lines went in the water at 9:00 a.m. and by 6 p.m. we had tallied a staggering 34 blue marlin releases out of 46 bites. I literally lost count of how many fish we saw, they were attacking in numbers that were quite literally uncountable. Several times throughout the day, hooked fish would be followed by several other free swimming marlin — too many double headers to count, and more triples than I can honestly remember.

At one point it took us eight minutes to catch a triple header of 250 to 375-pounders on baits. We managed to TBF tag 23 blues that day.

On June 30, we managed to break four world records in one day: the most fish ever released by one boat in a single day (34), the most fish ever released by a single angler in one day (27), and the most fish ever released by a single boat in a season (at that point it was 464). Potentially we also broke the most ever tagged by the Billfish Foundation that day as well for a single year, but we confirmation from TBF.

Here the highlights of the season:

Days fished 66
Largest Fish To Date 475 pound
Methods Used bait and switch, lures, live bait
Raised 925
Bites 772
Releases 552 (at the moment)
TBF Tags Placed 388

ALASKA: caught an huge 482 pound halibut

A monster size halibut was caught the past wee in Alaska; although is one of the largest landed in the Pacific Ocean in a decade, it will not make the record books.

The 482 pound - 218 kilo halibut surpassed the previous record of 459 pounds - 207 kilo, also caught in Alaska.
Unfortunately the old angler Jack McGuire lost his chance at the top spot in the IGFA (international Game Fish Association - www.igfa.org) record book when he asked for help during the 30 minutes fight.

McGuire  was deep water fishing off Glacie Bay, near Gustavus when hooked the big fish; he was on board the 28 feet catamaran of "Six Pack Cahrter" with Capt. Rye Phillip.

The monster size halibut was caught on a bottom of 130 feet near Lemesurier Island with a chunk of fish on a 100 lb line with a 240 lb mono leader.

Seems that McGuire's halibut isn't the only Alaskan fish to miss the record book. Two halibut caught few yeas ago were estimated at 466 pounds each, according to the Alaska Dispatch. Unfortunately neither of the communities where the fish were caught had big enough scales to officially weigh them.

The current world record Pacific Halibut was caught here in Alaska in Ducth harbour in late 1996 by angler Jack Tragis.

You can see more huge Pacific halibut at Big Fish of the World we site.

WORD RECORDS: last hot catches of July 2014

Here some exciting IGFA (International Game Fish Association) world record submissions in this month’s Hot Catches:

Angler Raleigh Werking has been submitting IGFA world records for over thirty years, and still continues to pursue trophy game fish on light tackle to this day. While fishing out of Seward, Alaska on June 9th, Werking landed a 9.3 kg (20 lb 8 oz) yelloweye rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus) that could earn him the new men’s 8 kg (16 lb) line class record. Werking needed only six minutes to subdue the potential record, after it ate the dead herring he was using for bait. The current IGFA record is 8.79 kg (19 lb 6 oz).

Tying knots with 1 kg (2 lb) line may seem a nearly impossible feat at times – never mind using it to catch a potential world record fish. That is exactly what Richard Hart did on May 21st when he landed a 10.01 kg (22 lb 1 oz) jack crevalle (Caranx hippos) while fly fishing Barra del Colorado, Costa Rica. Hart skillfully played the jack for an hour, before it was landed, weighed and released. Despite a long battle, Hart reports the fish – the potential men’s 1 kg (2 lb) tippet class record - swam away in good health! The current IGFA record stands at 4.98 kg (11 lb).

Angler Duane Christie of Chiayi City, Taiwan caught the potential new All-Tackle predatory carp (Chanodichthys erythropterus) on May 18th while casting a Rapala Risto-Rap lure in Taiwan’s Chengwen Reservoir. After hooking up, Christie needed only a few minutes to land the fish, which weighed in at 4.75 kg (10 lb 7 oz) – only 5 oz heavier than the current record. Christie was able to release the fish alive after it was properly documented.

THAILAND: huge catches with fly rod

Here the last fishing report from Thailand from top fishing guide Jean-Francois Helias:

"Our goods friend from Hong Kong, John Mitchell and his wife Selina, both
regular clients since 2000, just left Bangkok today. They came on Saturday
28 for a 4 days trip (two & and a half days fishing), mainly fly fishing but
with a bit of conventional fishing as well for Selina.

Both did very well  with lots of catches
though the water conditions were not the best at this raining period of the
year."

As usual lots of redtail catfish catches, a few hemibagrus, two chaophraya catfish (biggest one in the 130 lb -60 kg mark), and two big arapaima on the fly this morning to end the trip."
