WORLD RECORD NEWS: May 2014 catches

Native to the rivers of China and eastern Siberia, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) have been introduced to waterways all over the globe. World records for the species range from Bulgaria, Germany, Japan, Romania, and across the United States, and angler Dennis Triana of Miami, Florida, USA, is the latest to submit a catch to contend a title. After soaking a piece of bread in a canal near his home, the experienced angler caught and released a 20.38 kg (44 lb 15 oz) grass carp on April 2nd. Triana needed 15 minutes to subdue the fish – which he quickly released alive after it was properly documented. If approved, Triana’s catch will become the new men’s 24 kg (50 lb) line class record, the current record for which is 15.2 kg (33 lb 8 oz).

Wreck fishing has proven productive for at least one young angler this season: on March 11th, while fishing the Consols wreck a few miles off the coast of his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, angler Jonathan Kurowski caught what could be the new Male Junior record for tautog (Tautoga onitis). Kurowski was soaking a green crab on the bottom when the fat 7.34 kg (16 lb 3 oz) ‘tog hit. After a quick five minute fight, Kurowski had the fish boated and was on the way back to the docks to get an official weight. The current IGFA record is 5.89 kg (13 lb 0 oz).

Capt. Ward Michaels, who runs a fishing and hunting outfitter out of Orlando, Florida, USA, recently submitted a record application for Pacific snook (Centropomus nigrescens) that could become the new All-Tackle standard. Michaels hooked the massive snook on March 6th while fishing out of Puerto Quepos, Costa Rica with local guide Roy Zapata Calderon. Nearly 30 minutes after Michaels’ sardine got crushed, he boated an incredible 27.9 kg (61 lb 8 oz) fish. If approved, Michaels’ catch will replace the existing record which currently stands at 26.19 kg (57 lb 12 oz).

Nevada’s Pyramid Lake remains on fire with producing trophy sized cutthroat trout, as local angler Adam Garcia found out on March 2nd while casting a black marabou jig in the chilly lake water. Five minutes after coming tight on what he knew was a quality fish, Garcia landed a massive 9.66 kg (21 lb 5 oz) cutthroat that qualifies him for the potential new men’s 6 kg (12 lb) line class record, which currently stands at 5.32 kg (11 lb 12 oz). Garcia’s submittal is the seventh potential world record to come out of Pyramid Lake in the past three months!

Here below a short report from the deep of Thailand jungle by top fishing guide Jean Francois Helias:

"I’m just out from the Srinakarin jungle and currently on my way to 2 more days fishing for predators with a French client.

We had some awesome top water fishing for snakeheads there these two past days.

I caught 12 snakes myself, all on top water (both on Addy and on Udy frog lures), biggest one (see attached photo) weighing 14.80 lb - 6.70 kg on certified scales.

The kind of super biggie “pla shado” lots of anglers dream to catch….I’m very pleased with it…perfect accurate zen cast of mine ..right into floating pieces of wood….initiating a helluva strike …followed by a very violent fight…"

With this great catch Chamberlain shattered a 30 plus year old state record. This record size fish was caught while fishing in Lake Francis Case behind Fort Randall Dam off the Missouri River.

The previous record for this strange fish was 120 lb and 12 oz back in 1979

This fish is a living fossil, isthe largest and longest lived species of freshwater fishes. It is native to the Mississippi River drainage, these prehistoric fish once roamed freely throughout the network of rivers in the central US.

US: State Record Blue Catfish Caught in Virginia

Last week, young angler Austin Hoffman was fishing on the Ohio River just to try some new gear in his boat.

He was so lucky to hook up a giant size blue catfish; he was in the right place and right time and landed an incredible 47.7 inch and  52.95 pound - 24 kilo blue catfish beating the previous state record.

Austin’s blue catfish broke both the length and weight records for Virginia state and becomes the first in the recorded sport fishing history of West Virginia to eclipse the 50-pound mark.
The previous Virginia state record for blue catfish was also caught in the Ohio River back in 2012 by angler Mark Foster with a 43.9 inch fish weighing 44.5 pounds.

Austin  fought the big catfish for about 15 minutes and when he got him to the surface, there was no doubt in his mind it was a new state record.”

Once caught, he was able to stuff it into the boat’s live well where it remained alive while an official verified the record and the released it.
