LAOS: a great catch, an huge Jullien Golden carp

Here a short report from fishing guide Jean Francois Helias:

"Coming to Laos during the rainy season was of course not going to bring us the best fishing conditions. But my client could only take his vacation at that period. Also he is more of a photographer than an angler. So not catching fish was not a problem to him. More important was for him to take lots of great photos. Laos just offers that all day long.
Any body of water was red color. Rivers were very muddy. Mahseer fishing with lure was a failure. No way they could see a lure in that soup.
But today was a very special day to me. My client and I caught only 4 fish in 8 hours of fishing in the mountains of Luang Prabang province. I was the luckiest, landing the biggest Jullien Golden carp I've ever hooked up to date: a lovely 16.48 kg. What a run and what a fight. I almost got spooled out. My small hook (again I was fishing for small barb) got totally strengthen but luckily (and because I played that fish as smooth as I could) I did not loose that biggie.

NORWAY: huge 91 pound atlantic cod

Angler Morten Hvam was fishing off the island of Soroya in the Norwegian Sea when he landed this 91-pound, 15-ounce cod (41.29 kilogram), which broke for sure the European record by 15 ounces. Morten was deep fishing with a big silicone grub with the goal to catch an halibut when he hooked up this monster cod.
This huge cod have been a theme in Norway and other Scandinavian waters, with anglers from Denmark landing 67-pounders last year. Fisheries managers are seeing this a celebration for their practices.
The IGFA (International Game Fish Association) world record Atlantic Cod was set off the coast of New Hampshire in 1969 with a 98-plus-pounder. But at this rate, the next one is coming out of the Norwegian Sea.

USA: massive record flathead catfish in Michigan

A new record record flathead catfish caught in Michigan. Rodney Akey was fishing in his hometown when he landed a massive  49-pound, 8-ounce catfish that bests the standing record by exactly 2 pounds.

IGFA news: Hot Catches world record May 2012

All IGFA world record application received this month:

While trolling a rigged skipjack tuna off the coast of Houhora, New Zealand on February 17, 2012, kiwi angler Nathan Adams hooked into an enormous Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnusorientalis). After a grueling 40 minute battle with the brute of a fish, the tuna was landed and the crew of the Western Break headed back to the docks where it tipped the scales at 335.4 kg (739 lb 6 oz). Adams’ catch qualified him for the potential new men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record, surpassing the existing record by more than 90.7 kg (200 lb). Even more impressive is that the fish was landed on a 6.6 m (21.5 ft) vessel – not too bad seeing the fish taped out at 2.47 m

Gabon native Gregory Tordjeman recently traveled to Panama to fish with local guide Olivier Charpentier. Casting a Sebile Stick Shad off Islas Secas on January 8, 2012, Tordjeman landed a bluefin trevally (Caranxmelampygus) that measured 76 cm on an IGFA Official Measuring Device before being released alive. With the current record standing at 70 cm, Tordjeman qualifies for the potential new All-Tackle Length record for this species.

Angler Mauro Marzaduri, of San Lazzaro de Savenea, Italy, was fishing with guide Giusepe Galliani on January 1, 2012 when he landed this dentex (Dentexdentex) off of Olbia, Italy. Mauro needed 30 minutes to bring his potential men’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class record fish off the bottom after it ate the live squid he was using for bait. Back at the docks, the fish weighed in at 11.97 kg (26 lb 6 oz), surpassing the existing record by 1.07 kg (2 lb 6 oz). Not a bad way to start off the New Year!

IGFA’s Malaysian Representative Christopher S.G. Tan was trolling a Halco lure in Selangor, Malaysia on March 28, 2012 when he landed a lengthy snakehead (Channa spp.). Tan needed 5 minutes to bring his catch to the boat, where he quickly measured, photographed and released the fish alive. Measuring out at 85 cm, Tan’s catch qualifies him for the potential new All-Tackle Length record for snakehead.

IGFA Representative Peter F. Binaski recently traveled from his home in California to target some of south Florida’s near shore game species on fly, and he was not disappointed. Fishing with Capt. Quintin Hall on March 30, 2012 off of Hobe Sound, Florida, Binaski coaxed a thick 87 cm crevalle jack (Caranxhippos) to eat a well presented deceiver fly. Thirty five minutes later, the fish was boated and quickly measured, photographed and released alive, qualifying Binaski for the potential new All-Tackle Length record. The existing record stands at 85 cm.

Angler Austin Anderson, of Coppell, Texas, USA landed a 22.85 kg (50 lb 6 oz) smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobusbubalus) while fishing Lake Fork, Texas, USA on March 3, 2012. Using a dough ball for bait, the young angler needed 40 minutes to land the fish that qualifies him for both the male Junior record as well as the 24 kg (50 lb) line class record.  After the fish was weighed on the river bank, it was released alive to grow even bigger. The current male Junior record stands at 3.86 kg (8 lb 8 oz) and the 24 kg (50 lb) line class record is 8.77 kg (19 lb 5 oz).

Angler Derek Szczepaniak of  Mt. Prospect, Illinois, USA recently travled to Ft. Pierce, Florida, USA where he caught his first snook ever, and it just so happens that it is also a potential world record!  Fishing with Capt. Peter Deeks on March 27, 2012, Szczepaniak fed the 98 cm Atlantic snook (Centropomusspp.) a live pilchard and the fight was on. After a tough 15 minute fight, the fish was boated, measured, and photographed before being released alive. With the existing record standing at 92 cm, Szczepaniak’s first snook qualifies him for the potential new All-Tackle Length record.

Kiwi angler Sue Tindale continues to submit records at an incredible rate, but she is certainly not sacrificing the quality of her catches. Fishing “Sue’s Rock” with her husband, Capt. Scott Tindale, on February 28, 2012, Tindale landed a hefty Hapuku (Polyprionoxygeneios) in 35 minutes after it ate the skipjack she was using for bait. Back at the docks, the fish tipped the scales at 23.2 kg (51 lb 2 oz), qualifying her for a potential All-Tackle record.  The current IGFA record is vacant.

IGFA Lifetime Achiever Stan Nabozny of The Woodlands, Texas, USA continues to add to his record total with a recent trophy he landed while fishing the Tennessee River, Tennessee, USA with guide Stever Baker on March 27, 2012.  Using a live threadfin for bait, Nabozny landed the 103 cm landlocked striped bass (Moronesaxatilis) in just 10 minutes. After the necessary documentation was done, the fish was quickly released alive, qualifying Nabozny for the potential new All-Tackle Length record.

ARKANSAS: a 68 pound striped bass

Rodney Ply caught a giant 68-plus-pound striped bass while fishing Bull Shoals in Arkansas USA. It could become the new IGFA record for the specie.
Several weeks before the catch…Ply registered for Mustad Hooks’ “Hook-a-Million” contest. Catch a state record fish on a Mustad Hook and win $100,000. Catch a world record fish and you could land $1,000,000.
Well Ply’s shot at the state record were shot down by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, but his hopes for a cool mill are still alive. The IGFA has yet to rule on his fish, but when they do, they may also be ruling on the legitimacy of Alabama Rigs.
If the IGFA certifies the catch, they may also be certifying the use of Alabama rigs.

AUSTRALIA: record flathead landed?

RODRIGUES: last report from Rod Fishing Club

Yann Colas from Rod Fishing Club in Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean send us this report and images: "Igor, from Royal Safari, comes with his customers Andrey and Natalya. An L one-day trip and a 34 hour-trip on the Eastern Bank were planned. But the weather only enabled them to make three days around Rodrigues. These difficult fishing conditions (short and irregular 4m. waves, wind over 20 knots) lead to many unhooks. If there was not much quantity, for once, there were beautiful specimens of yellowfin tunas, wahoos, red snappers, trevallies, sharks, barracudas and doggies.

CONGO: a new goliath tigerfish report

The plane arrived from Pointe Noire to 8am and 45 time to get out luggages and we're off to the Mami Wata. After 2 hour 15 of navigation, we arrive at the Tigerfish's Camp. We eat with a glass of cold beer and around 15h 30 we started to fish. Half an hour later Raymond has a Mbenga attack on the lure and the back of Mbenga makes do with the fin surface in a tub of water ... but it misses the decoy in motion and Raymond happy to see the attack still a slight disappointment, the afternoon and the first half day of fishing ends with nothing more.
The second day Max and Raymond launch their decoys aggressively and at once a beautiful attack is made on the lure of Max and Mbenga whole body jumps out of the water and I have just enough time to I exclaim, "here it is!" that disengages Mbenga ... Max did not time to do anything but he saw his first Mbenga to the attack on the lure, this one I counted between 12 & 14 kg.
The third day it is hot and very hot and there a small attack is made on an illusion of Raymond and does not cling and views of teeth that cut a little lure, it would be a Mbenga not exceeding 3 KG (then a baby)

The fourth and final day of fishing everyone is stressed because no Mbenga is mounted in the boat and it would be nice if we can take pictures ... mid-morning has a new Mbenga reaches the surface to attack the lure of Raymond and runs right side without taking ... wow what luck! the afternoon we have two rods that are waiting with two dead fish and the boat is drifting in the water flow because both fishermen had already worked extensively in casting their lures for three days and when suddenly after half an hour Cane folds and the reel starts to sing, finally a good sharp attack and Raymond is quick to take the cane and ferre Immediately, the two-Mbenga jumps back very quickly and after a fight he returned to the boat and then I catch and I gets on the boat.

IRELAND: pike report from Laugh Corrib

Last week saw the start of the Pike Fishing for 2012 here at Portarra Lodge.  The weather conditions were not very suitable - very cold winds blowing from the North.
Two Pike anglers from France came here to fish for big pike as they heard that Lough Corrib was famous for its large strong fighting Pike.  I was available to be their guide.  It was their first visit to Ireland and they were very excited and eager to try their luck.
Over their three days on the lake they boated 12 pike - 10 of which were in the "double figures" with the biggest fish just over the Meter and weighting 18 lbs. Most of the pike were caught using "dead bait" and a float and a few were caught on "deep sinking" lures  as the fish were not near the surface due to the cold temperatures.
They were really delighted with their catch as any of the 12 pike (except 1) would have been a personal best for both anglers.  They were so impressed both with the size and fighting ability of the pike that they are returning again this year to try and catch a few "20 pounders"

The French men had a Go Pro camera and took some excellent footage of the fishing both over & under the water.  Once they have the film edited they plan to put it on Facebook.  When I get the details I will forward them on to you all.  (Photo shows Alexandrea Pilon with his Meter Pike)

NEWSFLASH:  Two very large Pike were caught by "Trout Anglers" who decided to try their skills at "Fly Fishing for Pike".  One of the pike was  24.5 lbs and the bigger one was a super specimen fish of 37.5 lbs.  Good news is that both fish were released back into the lake.  Good news also is that they were caught in waters close to, and frequented quite often by anglers staying at, Portarra Lodge.  To date I have not received a photo of the fish - but I can say that my sourse of information is 100%.
