RUSSIA: Varzina river salmon fishing report
On the last week at Varzina Main Lodge was marked by suddenly good run of summer run big Atlantic salmon. After some very hard fishing weeks Varzina river has finally presented us a really good fishing that we usually observe during this time in normal year. Unfortunately, there were no big samples, maximum size was only 8 kilos. The majority of fish was 4.5 to 6 kilo summer run salmon and grilse. However, 95% of caught fish were glaringly white and covered with sea lice. Even some guests who came to the Lodge to dive in Barents sea, having no idea what is fly fishing in general and how to catch salmon on this, tried fishing and had good results. The biggest fish were landed by one of the divers and now newcomer in salmon fishing. The best result was reached by Mr. Gennady Zharkov and his daughter Anna, who managed to land 15 fish per one day. The general result of the week is 28 salmon in 6 days of fishing.

IGFA Hot Cathes July 2012
Standing records for swordfish, whiterock bass, largemouth bass, Atlantic halibut and more are being challenged in this month’s edition of the IGFA Hot Catches. This selection of the latest potential records from Australia, the Clipperton Atoll, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, and Florida and Nebraska in the United States is on its way to the IGFA Record Committee to see if they set a new bar for anglers around the world!
Swordfish(Xiphiasgladius) are considered by many anglers to be among the toughest fighting gamefish in the sea, but that reputation did not deter female junior angler Jessie Wright. Fishing out of Garden Patch, New Zealand on April 9, 2012, the 16 year old angler landed a quality 165.2 kg (364 lb 3 oz) broadbill in just over four hours after it took the rigged squid they were drifting. This potential female junior record was landed on the Western Break, captained by Nathan Adams who also has a pending men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record for Pacific bluefin tuna. The current female Junior record stands at 81.5 kg (179 lb 10 oz) and was also caught in New Zealand.
South African angler Hennie Moller landed a sharptooth catfish (Clariasgariepinus) on April 17, 2012 while fishing Kakamas, South Africa. Tipping the scales at 18.26 kg (40 lb 4 oz), Moller’s fish qualifies for the new potential 24 kg (50 lb) line class record. After the catfish ate a live mudfish, this potential record catch was landed in 10 minutes and released alive after the necessary documentation was taken. The current IGFA record is 15.1 kg (33 lb 4 oz).
Angler Matthew Nadeau of Lafayette, Colorado,USA landed a 5.36 kg (11 lb 12 oz) whiterock bass (Moronesaxatilis x M. chrysops) on June 9, 2012 while fishing Lake McConaughy, Nebraska. Nadeau landed the fish in three minutes after it ate the streamer fly he was casting. If approved, Nadeau’s fish will replace the existing 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record which stands at 4.98 kg (11 lb).
California native Kathleen J. Rounds recently traveled to the ClippertonAttoll to target the variety of game fish species found around this eastern Pacific Ocean island. While casting a Salas 7x spoon on April 13, 2012 with guide Jonathan Yamate, Rounds needed 20 minutes to land a bluefin trevally (Caranxmelampygus) that tipped the scales at a whopping 13.24 kg (29 lb 3 oz), qualifying her for the potential All-Tackle record as well as the women’s 15 kg (30 lb) line class record. The current IGFA record is 11.99 kg (26 lb 7 oz).
Angler Patrick Sebile was fishing with local guide Jeff Brooks on May 6, 2012 when he pulled a largemouth bass (Micropterussalmoides) from Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA. Sebile landed the fish in a minute after it ate the SebileProppler Buzz lure he was casting. Sebile’s catch measured out to 61 cm and was released alive, qualifying him for the potential new All-Tackle Length record. The existing record stands at 59 cm.
German angler Rainer Korn, was fishing off of Skjerstadfjord, Norway on May 13, 2012 when he landed a 15.9 kg (35 lb) Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossushippoglossus). Korn was using a shad for bait and needed 15 minutes to boat the potential men’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class record. The current record stands at 6.04 kg (13 lb 5 oz).
Heather Michelle Harkavy is no stranger to the record books, and at age 17 she has accumulated nearly 100 records. Harvkavy’s recent 14.51 kg (32 lb ) permit (Trachinotusfalcatus) could add to that total, as it qualifies for the potential Female Junior record. Harvkavy was fishing with Capt. Mike Holliday on June 8, 2012, and got the permit to eat a live crab. Fifteen minutes after Harvkavy boated the fish, she had obtained an accurate weight reading and releasedher catch alive. If approved, Harvkavy’s fish will best the existing record by 2 lb.
Aussie angler Cassandra Murphy was fishing with Jim Maguire out of Morten Island, Australia on June 19, 2012 when she landed an impressive longtail tuna (Thunnustonggol). Using a slimy mackerel for bait, Murphy needed 40 minutes to land this potential All-Tackle Length fish that measured out to 110 cm. As with every All-Tackle Length record, this fish was released alive after the necessary documentation. This record is currently vacant.

Top fishing guide Dean Werk moved the sturgeon and the boat to shore in a timely fashion. A fish of this size and great strength is nearly impossible to land. Once on shore they sfarted examinated the head and dorsal fin Dean realized it was a untagged wilde and old White Sturgeon. Together the group measured it and applied a tag to the side below the head of the fish. The monster and huge sturgeon came up next to the boat it was almost as long as the boat. The big fish measured an 12 feet and 4 inches, and it wasto big to weigh it, charts indicate that its weight is about 1,100 pounds. It had a 53 inch girth!!
"I've been a professional fishing guide on the Fraser for 25 years and I've never seen a sturgeon this big," says Dean Werk, owner of Great River Fishing Adventures. "We have helped to collectively tag more than 47,000 white sturgeon since 1995, and scanned in excess of 90,000 tagged sturgeon that have been caught and released. This tells us this dinosaur fish hasn't been caught in at least 18 years if ever at all. I'd bet she's over 100 years old."
"It is the most excitement I've ever had with a fish. It all happened so quickly," says 65 year old Michael Snell. "When we picked her head up out of the water, it was almost three feet wide. I never knew a fish could be that large!"

THAILAND: new fishing destination
Last info received from Thailand fishing guide Jean Francois Helias:
"Just a few words and pics today to talk about the new lake just opened last month on June 1, 2012. That lake, located only a few meters from the Ratchaburi predators lake (same owner), has been stocked for 4 years with mainly carp and barb species. My boys Kik, Noi, and I know each part of that lake and its bottom like the back of our hand, as we saw it dugged for months before it got filled with water.
That lake is inhabited by around 15 various species including Mekong catfish up to 180 kg, Siamese carp up to 60 kg, Catla carp (Catla catla) up to 35.00 kg, Rohu (labeo rohita) up to 22 kg, Jullien's golden carp up to 20 kg, bighead carp up to 12.00 kg, giant goramy up to 12 kg, Small scale mud carp or mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus) up to 12.00 kg, Chinese common carp ((Cyprinus carpio) up to 10.00 kg, Black sharkminnow (Morulius chrysophekadion) up to 6.00 kg, labeo barbatulus up to 5.00 kg, bangana behri up to 5.00 kg, soldier river barb (Cyclocheilichthys enoplos) up to 5.00 kg, mad barb ((Leptobarbus hoeveni), greater bony lipped barb (Osteochilus melanopleurus) up to 5.00 kg, java barb ((Barbonymus gonionotus), thai mahseer (Tor tambroides) up to 3.00 kg, stracheyi mahseer up to 2.00 kg, etc.
It is obvious that such a large variety of species, especially rare ones, are going to offer visiting anglers, in the coming months, lots of opportunities to earn new IGFA All Tackle world records.
We had the chance to fish that lake twice since its opening. It was awesome on both days. My clients had a large string of catches of various species. Including our very first IGFA world record set there, on June 16, by our Malaysian friend Tung Beng Lee, with the catch of a 4.10 kg Labeo Barbatulus (see below pic) - breaking the 2.10 kg current record held by yours truly.
We got close to set a second world record very recently when I caught a lovely 5.20 kg giant gourami, my personal best to date. My catch was short of 200 grams only to tie the the 5.20 Kg record held for many years by my team guide Nat. With the biggest gourami in that lake weighing in the 12.00 kg mark, I'm confident sooner or later someone should retire Nat's record.
If you are interested to give a good shot at the carp and barb species of that new lake, at the monster Mekong catfish, or at a IGFA world record (a good option as well is to mix both predators fishing at Ratchaburi and carp fishing at Theerasart, both lakes being located in the very same area), please contact me :

RUSSIA: Varzuga annual report
On Varzuga river in Russia the 2012 season is ended with a staggering 8,500 salmon in just 6 weeks!!
Here a short report from "Rxtons'":
"The season on the this Russian river will go down as one of the very best in the 20 years that we have been running the programme. It did not start as hoped, however. Our main aim is to have rods on the river about 6-7 days after the ice has broken and while this year the ice break was 3-6 days later than hoped, the portents were good as our first clients flew into Murmansk. The 8 rods at middle Varzuga landed 328 salmon for their week with the latter half of the week fishing better than the first. Unfortunately at lower Varzuga, the rods suffered from an unusually quick melt of the snow which coloured up the water and the fishing was exceptionally difficult."
To view the news of the season via the Varzuga blog, please go to www.varzuga.com
