US: two monster record size black drum caught!!

Anglers caught two absolute monster drums, the bigger one unofficially smashing the current world-record mark at an estimated 122 pounds.

Adam Kirby was fishing near Georgetown and had had a pretty good day;
on his first cast, Kirby hooked and landed a black drum the men estimated to be around 110 pounds.

They decided to keep fishing, and around 40 minutes later, Bremner became the star as he hooked into an even bigger drum. Using the same formula, they estimated this fish to be around 122 pounds, which would’ve effectively made it the new world record, beating the standing record of 113 pounds by 9 pounds.

South Carolina forbids anglers from keeping fish outside of 14-27 inches, even to be officially weighed.

BOLIVIA: caught giant record size Jau catfish

A giant Amazon catfish way over the IGFA world record has been landed during an exploratory trip to Bolivia with adventure holiday operator www.Amazon-Angler.com .

The ‘Jau’ catfish was estimated by experienced Amazon guide Steve Townson at around 170lb after it was landed by one of his guests, Martin Content, on a trip to virgin water that had never been fished with rod and line before.
The current IGFA All-Tackle record for the species stands at 109lb, a fish caught by Russell Jenson in 2004 from the Urariquera River in Brazil.

Said Steve: “There are always a few things that can go wrong on new trips to virgin waters like this. Water too high; water too low. Stories exaggerated. Travel hick-ups.
“However, this is an incredible destination offered by no-one else and the trip went like clockwork from the start.

“Martin’s Jau was just massive. I have fished the Amazon over 200 times and never seen a Jau even close to these proportions. It was miles over the world record – somewhere in the 160-180lb bracket.

“Our guests had an incredible time, with loads of big catfish and arapaima, many huge fish lost too, and lots of broken lines and even broken rods. This is a destination that we are definitely coming back to next year, with trips being organised from July to November 2018.”
Martin’s huge Jau was quickly returned, and he will not be claiming a new world record.

WORLD RECORDS: hot catches July 2017

South African angler Tristan Schrieber – age 16 – caught this 35.8 kg (78 lb 14 oz) narrowbarred mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) on May 5th which may become the new Male Junior world record. Schrieber was fishing out of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when the massive mackerel hit the live maasbanker (goggle eye/jack mackerel) he was slow-trolling behind the Wattu, captained by PJ Botha. Schrieber needed approximately 20 minutes to bring the fish to gaff on the 10 kg (20 lb) gear he was using. The current IGFA world record is 31.8 kg (70 lb 1 oz).

British angler Greg Iszatt potentially set the new All-Tackle world record for golden mahseer (Tor putitora) with this 29.93 kg (66 lb) fish that he caught on June 14th while fishing the Mahakali River in India. Iszatt was fishing the fast-moving river using trout for bait, and needed 25 minutes to land the massive mahseer. Once subdued, the fish was quickly documented, weighed in a sling, and released alive. The current IGFA world record is 19.96 kg (44 lb).

Kiwi angler Sam Yendell – age 16 - caught this incredible 212.4 kg (468 lb 3 oz) swordfish (Xiphas gladius) on July 8th while fishing off Tutukaka, New Zealand. Fishing with 60 kg (130 lb) gear, Yendell needed one hour to land the swordfish after it ate the squid he was using for bait. If approved, the broadbill will earn Yendell the new Male Junior world record, which currently stands at 177.6 kg (391 lb 8 oz).

US: caught in Illinois a record size flathead catfish

Over the last several weeks several rivers, to include the Mississippi, are well over their banks and flooded out due to heavy rains.

Thousands of acres of farmland near riverways are underwater right now for this reason.

Farmer Louis Glidewell took advantage of the situation and went fishing in his own backyard and caught a monster size flathead catfish.

After measurements were taken, Glidewell’s near-record flathead weighed out to 77.55 pounds, just missing the state mark by four pounds.

It also had a 57-inch length and an incredible 37-inch girth.

GABON: caught a world record 326 pound tarpon!

This could be a new potential world record tarpon...but is still a mystery.

This photo of a potential 326 lbs (147 kilos) world record tarpon has been making rounds on the webfor the past few days. However, very little is known about the fish.

The "International Tarpon Conservation Association" shared the photo claiming that fish was caught in Olende, Gabon, Africa. This huge fish was hooked using an artificial lure and was eventually released.

Unfortunately the fish was unable to be accurately weighed on a scale, but measurements of the fish were taken. According to the measurements taken by the anglers, the fish weighed in at a whopping 326 pounds.

Although this is the only photo that can be found of the fish, I must admit that it does look to be about that size.

The International Tarpon Conservation Association is doing what they can to dig up more information on the catch. As of now, these are all the details that have been uncovered.

I would not be surprised to find out that all the facts on this fish are indeed true. Since Africa is known for its extremely large tarpon, it is totally possible that this fish was actually landed and measured the way they reported it to have been.

US: caught a 49" muski while ice fishing

The Iowa great lakes are know for producing some giant muski, in particular the Spirit Lake.

Angler Mike Fogarty had a great day ice fishing when hooked an huge fish.

Fogarty was enjoying time fishing with his family and was about to pack things up for the day. It was just then that one of his rattle reels started running. It didn’t take long for Fogarty to realize there was no ordinary little pan fish on the other end.

Eventually, the family stood around looking at a whopping 49″ muskie. Because muskies aren’t in season, they removed the hook, snapped a couple quick photos, and released the giant back through the ice.

The fish measured 26 inches around. For reference, the circumference of an 8 inch ice hole is just 25.12″.

THAILAND: caught monster size giant stigray of 550 pound

Here an interesting fishing report from our friend and to fishing guide Jean Francois Helias from Thailand:

"Our UK client, Luke Benson, who is in the military, will certainly never forget his Thailand fishing experience this past weekend. Luke had booked a 2 days fishing trip on Jan. 7 and 8, 2017, for giant freshwater stingray fishing with Megafishing Thailand, a fishing portal owned by our good friend Nathan. We know by experience that the period from December to May is the very best time of the year to optimize the chances to hook up one of those elusive aquatic creatures. Also we know too well that particular kind of fishing is kind of similar to gambling: we know where their territories, we know how to fish for them, the best rigs to use, and the best baits to attract them. But the fact is the main needed parameter for the angler to capture an himantura chaophraya has to be above all getting a big hand from Lady Luck!

That is one of the main reasons, by honesty, I am not too keen, since many years, on guiding visiting anglers to fish for the giant freshwater stingray. We still offer a package for it since some of our best buddies want badly to give it a shot though they are aware we cannot guarantee them a sure catch. Knowing how slim are the chances to score a giant freshwater stingray catch, I do not feel too good about being paid to deliver a kind of “fishing-gambling” which can be described as 20 % ALL and 80 % NOTHING! Because we truly fish for them in the true meaning of sport fishing. We do not scam visiting anglers (with guaranteed stingray catches) like a certain specialized tour guide company over here has done here for years...

Let’s go back to the Bang Pakong river, yesterday Jan. 8, with UK angler Luke Benson, and my team mate KIK who was in charge to assist him and to look after him for the 2 days fishing!  We had 4 of our baits sucked by stingrays on saturday 7th but no take. We were blank at the end of the day before heading for our usual local hotel to spend a good night of rest. Call it fate or destiny, the next day Lady Luck decided to come to the rescue. Luke landed a first giant freshwater stingray in the morning around 10.30 am: a male estimated weighing over 100 pounds. We were already pretty satisfied with that capture. Talking over the phone with Kik, I told him the day far from being over yet, who knows, we could get lucky again and catch another one before the end of the session…

We had to phone a few friends to come helping playing the huge stingray. From the time of the first run of the fish, until it finally got tamed for good, the fight lasted not less than 5 hours and 40 minutes on Luke’s stop watch. It is not the longest fight we ever had with a giant stingray. Years ago, while guiding my good friend Doug Olander, the editor of Sport Fishing magazine, four of us took turns to play another mega monster for 7 hours …until sadly the leader (certainly too much whipped by the ray’s tail) gave up and broke on us.

Kik and the experienced local people at the river estimated the weight of Luke Benson’s mega size himantura chaophraya  catch being close to 250 kilos (550 pounds). After the usual photo session (as seen below), and after having let the fish rest a bit, the barn door size stingray was safely released to go on with its life.

NEWS: caught huge 400+ lb Indian Ocean grouper

Some fishermen in the Indian Ocean near the archipelago of Seychellese off East Africa f caught an huge grouper said to be the third-largest fish of its kind on record.

It took seven fishermen to pull the gigantic fish aboard the boat the past week, and the enormity of it explains why. The  grouper weighed more than 420 pounds - 190 kilos and was 7 feet - 2.1 metres long.

By Saturday night, the fish was en route to England (UK) where it went from the wholesaler Hodgkinsons  in Manchester.

The owners purchased the goliath grouper for $1,260 and put it on display with the intention of cutting it up and selling it in pieces that will ultimately net the fish market $6,350.
