USA: massive Thresher Shark Caught in Montauk

On Wednesday, June 27, angler Paul Motta and 5of his friends headed out at first light and didn’t have to wait very long before one of their rods bent over.
“It was crazy,” Motta said. “We probably stood with the rod 20, 30 minutes each until we got really fatigued. Three and a half four hours it seemed like this shark never wanted to come up.” It did come up, and the guys raced back to J&B Tackle, where the monster shark weighed in at 497 pounds (225 kilograms). If the big shark catch is certified, it should best the standing state record, which was set in 2006 with a 467-pounder also in Montauk.

MEXICO: Pisces Fleet Report

June 16th-June 22nd 2012

BILLFISH: Much better week now that the huge ships are gone and the weather is getting warmer, so is the water bringing the fish a lot closer. Last week we were going all the way to Destiladeras on the Sea of Cortez, 37 miles from Cabo, now with the warmer water getting closer, so are the fish, we caught most of them at Punta Gorda and the 95 Spot, with really nice catches straight south from the arch only within 3 miles from shore. We had some unusual catches as well, La Brisa, this time captained by Julio Castro from the Tracy Ann caught a 170 lbs Swordfish for Glen & Randy Slomin from Melbourne Beach, FL. On June 19th, “Andrea” caught and released the first blue marlin and the first sailfish of the season, marlin weighed 180 lbs and the sailfish 100 lbs for Michael Morris & Ben Brewer from San Jose CA, they were trolling at Destiladeras on the Sea of Cortez, Blue marlin was caught on a pink and blue lure and the sailfish with live bait (caballito), same day, Rebecca released 4 striped marlin for Kathryn Gomez, Krystal & Adam Morgens from Chino CA. Good week to be a Californian angler in Cabo. A total of 25 striped marlin were caught, all released, blue marlin and sailfish were released again, only the swordfish was boated. 64% of our boats caught billfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Small game is still a bit slow, however we noticed more Dorado closing in, 40% of the boats caught at least one dorado, all on the small side with an average of 10 lbs, still enough for a sandwich. We are still waiting for the tuna to arrive. Pangas caught roosterfish, seabass and skipjack.

LOCATION: Destiladeras, 11:50, 95spot, 3 miles south from the arch.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Summer weather is kicking in, 91F average all week.

HAWAII: record-sized yellowfin tuna landed

The cahrter boat Reel Hooker boated a record-sized yellowfin tuna (also called Allison tuna) weighing 222.2 pounds (100.56 kg) by wahine angler Shauna Turner. She was fishing with Captain Greg France and deckman Chris Wong.

They were about five miles on the NASA-Buoy side of the K-Buoy off the backside of Lanai. It was looking good as they found the birds and porpoise school. Greg worked the area for about 30 minutes without getting a bite. Another boat came through the school, picking up an ahi on its first pass.

They decided to hang out and work the school for another hour. Greg told Chris to get out the salmon-colored" Lee Aoki" lure. He rigged it up and put it out on the long gone position.

They were running out of time, with Greg about ready to head back to Lahaina. About ten minutes later, on their last pass through the school, they had a bite on that lure.

The big yellowfin tuna took off straight down, ripping out the 60-pound test line from a 50-class reel for about 150 yards and then stopped. Greg thought it was one of the smaller ahi that had been caught during the day. Shauna had her ahi 45 yards from the boat in about 30 minutes.

Over the next hour, they were in a bit of a stalemate as they worked the tuna up the last 50 yards. The rod was doubled over the stern as Shauna short-pumped the rod, getting cranks when she could. They had a lot of drag on the reel, with the 60-pound test line pinging off the spool in a give-and-take.

Greg circled the fish trying to confuse it. This worked for awhile. He idled the boat ahead of the ahi, not letting it get under the boat but keeping it as close as possible. Greg made a couple of more circles before the leader came up. The ahi was digging back and forth across the stern and wasn't ready to come in.
This was Greg's largest yellowfin tuna in 20 years of fishing.

This is the largest yellowfin tuna by a wahine angler. It is also the largest ahi in nine years. It is the third largest by a Lahaina Charter boat and the fourth largest for Lahaina Harbor since 1977. The Lahaina Harbor record is 235 pounds, caught during the first Lahaina Jackpot Tournament back in 1977.

IGFA Hot Catches News June 2012

This month’s IGFA Hot Catches report brings with it some incredible potential new world records, including a swordfish, a black drum, a dorado and more – plus an electric eel! Read on for some of the hottest recent catches made in Brazil, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, New Zealand, Uruguay, and Delaware and the Florida Keys in the United States.

German angler Andreas Siegesmund recently returned from a trip to Guinea-Bissau where he landed a new potential All-Tackle Length cobia (Rachycentron canadum) that measured out to an impressive 136 cm. Siegesmund was fishing around Acunda-Bijugos with local guide Jean-Robin Dubouchet on April 27, 2012, and needed 25 minutes to land this tough fish after it ate the live bait he cast. After the proper measurements and photos were taken, the fish was released alive. The current IGFA record stands at 101 cm.

Light tackle fly angler Dotty Ballantyne continues her pursuit of saltwater game fish records on fly, this time targeting barracuda. Fishing out of Key West, Florida, USA with Capt. Robert Trosset on May 11, 2012, Ballantyne landed a 8.87 kg (19 lb 9 oz) great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) after it ate her baitfish pattern fly and put up a six minute fight. Ballantyne’s fish qualifies her for the potential new women’s 4 kg (8 lb) tippet class record, as the current record stands at 6.57 kg (14 lb 8 oz).

Florida Keys native Frank Young was fishing off the Dry Tortugas on May 6, 2012 when he landed a 10.23 kg (22 lb 9 oz) black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) that qualifies him for the potential new men’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class record. Young was fishing with squid and needed only eight minutes to boat the hard fighting bottom fish. The current IGFA record is (8.16 kg) 18 lb.

On a recent trip to Argentina, angler Michael J. Sadar of Fort Collins, Colorado, USA landed a beautiful dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) on April 22, 2012 while fishing the Uruguay River with local guide Rico Enzo. Sadar was casting a black and red streamer fly to entice the 103 cm fish to bite, and after a quick seven minute fight, the fish was subdued. The dorado was released alive after the necessary photos and measurements were taken, qualifying Sadar for the potential new All-Tackle Length record. The current IGFA record is 97 cm.

The IGFA recently received a potential men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record for swordfish (Xiphias gladius). The 404.4 kg (891 lb 8 oz) broadbill was landed by Kiwi angler Jim Gigger, while off Cape Karikari, New Zealand on April 9, 2012. Fishing aboard the Primetime with Capt. John Gregory, Gigger needed only an hour and 20 minutes to land the monster swordfish after it took the skipjack tuna they had rigged for bait. The existing men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record stands at 369 kg (813 lb 7 oz), and was caught on May 28, 2003 by Gerald Garrett while fishing out of the same location, Karikari, New Zealand.

IGFA Lifetime Achiever Dr. Gilberto Fernandes continues to add to his mounting record total with this electrifying All-Tackle record submittal. Fishing Igarape Taboca in his native country of Brazil, Fernandes landed a 3.36 kg (7 lb 6 oz) electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) on May 5, 2012 while soaking cut bait. The fish was safely boated in about three minutes and qualifies Fernandes for the potential All-Tackle record.

Angler Louis W. Melton traveled a few hours north from his hometown of Clarkesville, Maryland, USA on May18, 2012 to fish the Delaware Bay with IGFA Captain Brian Wazkavek. Melton was soaking surf clams when the 125 cm black drum (Pogonias cromis) hit and took him for a 17 minute fight. The fish was successfully boated, measured, photographed and released alive, qualifying Melton for the potential new All-Tackle Length record, which currently stands at 121 cm.

French angler Daniel Lopuszanski currently holds the men’s 8 kg (16 lb) line class record for tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) with a 92 kg (202 lb 13 oz) fish, but he may have recently bested his own record. Fishing out of Pointe Noire, Congo on April 4, 2012 with local guide Maurice Gregoire, Lopuszanski landed a massive 105.2 kg (231 lb 14 oz) silver king. Lopuszanski was using a live baitfish and needed an hour to land this potential new men’s 8 kg (16 lb) line class record.

RODRIGUES ISLAND: great fishing report

Igor, from Royal Safari, comes with his customers Andrey and Natalya. An L one-day trip and a 34 hour-trip on the Eastern Bank were planned. But the weather only enabled them to make 3 days around Rodrigues. These difficult fishing conditions (short and irregular 4m. waves, wind over 20 knots) lead to many unhooks. If there was not much quantity, for once, there were beautiful specimens of yellowfin tunas, wahoos, red snappers, trevallies, sharks, barracudas and doggies.

Gérard and Loïc come back for the 7th following year. Loving fishing and Rodrigues, father and son share each of their months of May, fishing on foot and aboard the Black Marlin. Therefore, they look forward to share the boat for fishing trips, either on the banks or for a day trip. A first one, as a warming up, enables them to catch a sailfish, yellowfin tunas, a shark as well as beautiful trevallies. Lydie, Loïc’s girlfriend, joined them for 2 XL and XXL trips on the Eastern Bank. Fishing by night in deep waters, we caught our first butterfish, and also lots of rosy jobfish, groupers, and very nice seriolas. Another 40 hour bank in the East, saw very big wahoos to be caught, most of them between 25 and 31 kg. To put an end to Black Marlin’s season, Loïc brought aboard a doggy of 50,5 kg, the 176th over 50 kg since the beginning of our activity.

Gert and William join Gérard and Loïc for a one-day trip to end up the season. Finally, it was a nice day with a white tip shark about 50 kg, a beautiful doggy of 31 kg and also numerous yellowfin tunas.

As usual, the boat will undergo its yearly lifting and let us meet now in the end of September for the next catch reports.

There was plenty of bait seen on the monitor upon arriving in Rosa Blanca. However the bite was over the Honey Hole. The first fish in the spread was very swift side bite to thr right short from a blue malrin estimated around 300#. The bite happend so quick that the line never popped out of a short rigger clipped and we were left with just a head. The secon fish was a nice striped marlin around 200# that was here to stay. AUSTRALIA: black marlin light tackle season started

What a start to the light tackle season in Far North Queensland!
Townsville's Cape Bowling Green has been providing anglers with plenty of marlin shots daily now since as early as April. While we wouldn't usually expect the season so really fire until July and August (just in time for the Townsville Billfish Challenge), the fish have been out of the blocks early this year and in greater numbers than we've seen in a while.
The average size of fish is right around that 10kg mark and are great fun on the light tackle. Some of the best fishing have been produced by Capt. Dean Beech on private boat Maverick who released 14 in three days fishing last week (including this first marlin for 10 year old Harrison Stark above). Also the club young guns have been getting in on the action with Luke, Daniel and Ethan releasing 5 little blacks on their 5.49 centre console on Saturday including two caught on 4lb tackle!

NORWAY: Atlantic salmon report on Gaula river

The fishing during the last few days has been very good on all our Lower Beats. It seems that the fishing gets better and better every day and at the moment it is difficult to follow up on all that is going on in time as a new catch report is coming in all the time from our fishermen. The biggest fish so far has been caught this morning by Charles Barrett jr. – a beautiful cock fish of 13,5kg (almost 30lb) which has been released after being weighted in one of our nets. But we will try to list all the catches accordingly to the time schedule. After the latest update the day continued very well for Mortan Carlsen from the Faroe Islands. He caught two fish on our Beat E1 during the evening session. The first fish was a medium sized salmon of about 5kg (11lb) which has been released. The 2nd fish was a good one of 9kg (19.8lb) and was bleeding badly, so Mortan had to keep the salmon.

Also our Norwegian guests Tommy Risnes and Stig Engstrøm had a great night on Beat E1. They caught 3 fish and lost several. Tommy is here fishing with us for the first time, but it did not take long until he landed his first two NFC-fish. The first salmon he caught he estimated to weight about 7kg (15lb) and he released it.

AUSTRALIA: closure of the sportfishing in the Coral Sea

The government of Australia has released its final proposed plan to establish a large marine reserve in the Coral Sea. The proposal includes the creation of Marine National Park Zones totaling roughly 194,000 square miles in which all fishing, including recreational fishing, would be prohibited. Pew Environment Group has been the leader in this campaign under its Global Ocean Legacy program, which is working diligently to establish massive closed reserves around the world.

The official comment period will open in July during which The Billfish Foundation will call on you once again to send comments to the Australian government in response. TBF will post our comments and the person to whom comments should be sent shortly. We encourage you to use TBF's comments or send in your own to voice your concerns to the Australian Government. Together we can ensure that our voice is heard and that fishing opportunities for anglers around the world are made available so that we may fish forever!
