KENYA: yellowfin tuna schoos arrived

Here the last Kingfisher fishing report from Kenya (Africa).

The reports are in and weigh-ins confirmed. The Yellofin tuna have arrived along Kenya coasts. From what our friends at "Sea Adventures" are saying, after a 9 year absence some very large fish indeed are moving into our waters.

We are excited and have wasted no time in getting out there. Our boats have been out to North Kenya Banks and Watamu banks over the past week and have landed some fine speciman's. A total of 36 fish weighing 2400 lb - 1083 kgs caught in 2 days, the biggest one weighing in at 45 kgs and smallest at 21 kgs.

Watch out for our monthly newsletter which will be posted in the next few days. In it we'll talk in more detail about the 'great tuna turn-on' and share some action shots. In the meantime, start preparing the soy, wasabi and sticky rice...the sashimi is on the way

NEW ZEALAND: hot action with huge bluefin tunas

Here a recent fishing report from Enchanter Fishing Charters in New Zealand:

"With a keen group of Chinese fishers armed with there own camera man for Chinese TV and heavy stand up gear to do battle with the giant bluefin tuna, the boys got more than what they bargained for with the first fish ripping them off their feet and around the cockpit like rag dolls.

Took the best part of two hours hrs to bring the first one to the boat and when pulled aboard taped out at a massive 630 pound - 285 kg first fish for the season and what a stunner, three hours later the next was hooked and brought to the boat in very short time  of 50 minutes, the fish was released estimated 520 lb -  250 kg.

The boys have to wait 3 more hours before the next one was hooked and played for two and half hour before the tag was placed an fish released at 575 lb - 260 kg , then again first bait was bit only to break off shortly after ,great first night boys were stoked with there first taste of these monsters.

Night 2:  we had 35 knots reluctantly we had to turn away and back home.

Night 3: we had the weather broken and us back on the fish, took half the night to get a bite only to break it off dam, one hour later we got hooked up again and sadly the fish died in the fight and came to the boat with no life so pulled aboard an taped out at 600 lb - 272 kg."

GUYANA: huge arapaima found in this South American country

British angler Steve Townson achieved his dream of catching a giant wild arapaima fish in Guyana, South America.

The wild arapaima is the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world. Steve’s massive catch weighed an estimated 250 lbs was taken from the Essequibo River using a 2 lb whole piranha as bait. After posing for photos, Steven released the fish to fight another day.

"The Arapaima is one of the world's biggest and mightiest freshwater fish and to catch them in the wild is a rare privilege," says Steve. "They are protected and cannot be removed by law for the table, but our partners in Guyana are working on strictly catch and release with the local Amerindian tribes”.

The adrenalin-seeking angler assured animal lovers that the fish was never removed from the water during the catch. Since the behemoths are actually quite fragile, the angler handled the arapaima with care and released it after gaining back its strength.

Surprisingly, Steve’s arapaima was not the biggest on record; a 339-lb fish has been caught recently by another angler who holds the current world record.

Steve runs the well-known fishing outfitter company Amazon-Angler.com and its sister company Africa-Angler.com. Anyone wishing to join Steve on trips inexciting destinations, please email him at steve@amazon-angler.com for more information.

NORWAY: caught an huge 513 lb Atlantic halibut

German angler Marco Liebenow was fishing in Norways sea when he landed an huge halibut; this big fish has smashed the world record for the biggest halibut fish ever caught on rod and line.

So he and 3 friends tied a rope around its tail and towed it back to shore where it had to be hoisted on to the quayside by a crane.

This giant halibut weighed 232 kg - 513 lb, easily beating the existing IGFA record of 189 kg - 419 lb.

He has  submitted a claim to the International Game Fish Association (www.igfa.org) and is awaiting confirmation.

This monster size fish was hooked off Kjollefjord in North Norway.

Marco said that when he first hooked it it felt like he has caught a submarine because it was so big. It took 4 men to bring it towards their small 19 ft boat and then they could only put a sling around its tail and pull it back to the harbour.

Back at the harbour, after weighting in, Marco donated the halibut to a local fish dealer.

USA: a 28 lb 9 oz rainbow trout caught in Idaho

An huge 13.2 kg - 28 lb and 9 oz rainbow trout was caught in Idaho, US just below the Dworshak Dam.

This big trout would crush the existing state record but will not qualify for the record book.

The fish cannot be submitted due to differences between state and tribal fishing rules.

Angler Tui Moliga is a member of the "Nez Perce Tribe", and when he caught the monster rainbow, he was using hook and line style that is legal for tribal members but ineligible for state records.

Despite the complications, Moliga's mood is unwavered.

"It would have been cool but it’s still not going to change the fact that is a big fish that I caught,” he told The Spokesman-Review. “I’m not a trophy hunter of fish but since I caught it I will be proud of it. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s the biggest one I ever caught.”

IGFA: world record hot catches August report

Great catches have been made all over the world in this month’s IGFA Hot Catches report! Potential world records from Mexico, the Netherlands, and Alaska, New York and more.

Angler Junichi Inada pulled a 97 cm grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) from the Senba River in his native country of Japan. Inada was soaking a piece of bread when the potential All-Tackle Length record carp hit. After an eight minute fight, Inada had the fish subdued and quickly released after properly documenting the catch. The current IGFA record stands at 92 cm.

Angler Jamie Hamamoto of Honolulu, Hawaii, landed a 4.65 kg (10 lb 4 oz) roundjaw bonefish (Albula glossodonta), while fishing with her father, Wade Hammamoto. The young angler was soaking a piece of scad in the surf off Kahuku , when her rod doubled over and line started peeling from her reel. Nearly 10 minutes later, Hamamoto had landed this potential All-Tackle record fish and qualified for the 10 lb Bonefish Club! The current IGFA record is vacant.

Junior angler Axel Bowmer recently traveled to the famed Portuguese island of Madeira to experience the amazing offshore fishing that can be had there. While trolling a Melton’s Cherry Jet with Capt. Gerard DeSilva, Bowmer hooked into a huge Atlantic bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) that ripped line off his Penn 130 reel. After 35 minutes in the fighting chair, he finally subdued the 88.31 kg (194 lb 11 oz) bigeye that qualifies him for the potential new male Junior record. The current IGFA record stands at 84.82 kg (187 lb).

Italian fly angler Paolo Pacchiarini recently traveled from his home in Milan to experience the endless fishing opportunities “down under” in Australia. While fishing with local guide Brett Wolf out of Exmouth, Pacchiarini hooked into a 10.43 kg (23 lb) golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) while casting a white clouser fly. After a 20 minute fight, Pacchiarini subdued the fish, then quickly documented the potential men’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet class record fish before releasing it alive. The current IGFA record is 8.16 kg (18 lb)

Eric Christopher Otte, of Wahoo, Nebraska, landed an enormous 18.46 kg (40 lb 11 oz) shortraker rockfish (Sebastes borealis) while jigging the deep waters of Cross Sound, Alaska on June 22nd with Capt. Joe Calanara. This potential All-Tackle record beats the existing IGFA record by almost five pounds.

Angler Julia Grace Ketner of Westhampton, New York, USA, landed a beautiful muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) on July 1st while fishing with Todd E. Young on Lake Chautauqua in upstate New York. Ketner enticed the musky to bite while throwing a Wiley lure, and less than five minutes after hooking up she had the 8.99 kg (19 lb 13 oz) fish boated. After a quick weighing and photo shoot, the potential Female Smallfry record musky was released alive to grow even bigger. The current IGFA record is 5.55 kg (12 lb 4 oz).

Angler Margaret Shaughnessy of Medford, Oregon landed a beautiful roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) on June 2nd while fly fishing with local guide Marco Lucero off the coast of Punta Las Arenas, Mexico. Shaughnessy’s potential women’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet class record rooster put up a brutal fight that lasted nearly four hours, after the fish ate the custom “raton” fly Shaughnessy was casting. Once landed, the fish was rushed to shore where it bottomed out a 60 lb Boga-Grip scale! Instead of killing the fish to get the actual weight, which was estimated at well over 70 lbs, Shaughnessy decided to release her catch alive to grow even bigger. And with the current IGFA record at 13.15 kg (29 lb 0 oz), a 60 lb fish is plenty big enough to qualify for a record!

Dutch angler P.C. Ouwendijk was fishing out of Hollands Diep, Netherlands on April 6th when he hooked into a sizeable zander (Sander lucioperca) while casting a soft plastic shad lure. After a quick fight, the experienced angler quickly measured and photographed the fish before releasing it alive. Measuring 68 cm, Ouwendijk’s zander qualifies for the potential new All-Tackle Length record as the current record stands at 65 cm.

UK: a 39 lb pike on fly at Chew Valley Reservior

An huge pike of  17.6 kg - 39 lb was caught on fly tackle by angler Russell Cowell during his first ever session targeting the species. Russell was fishing at Chew Valley Reservior in Somerset, UK to achieve his ambition of catching his first pike with 4 friends.

Due to tough conditions the party only had a handful of small pike to show for their first day efforts, but that all changed on the second afternoon.

Russell was using a 9 weight fly fishing rod coupled with a 100 lb bite leader when he hooked this monster size northern pike.

“Even though I was well aware of what this water is capable of nothing could have prepared me for this fish and the thrilling experience that it brought me. The fight was amazing and it almost leapt completely out of the water on a couple of occasions.

“Having never caught a pike before I didn’ t know how big the fish actually was until it rolled over in the net and I saw the girth of it, which truly was a sight to behold .

THAILAND: junior IGFA world record report

Here a fishing report from guide Jean Francois Helias from Thaiand:

"I’ve been guiding the Carter family from Oxford, England, here in Thailand for over 10 years. Dave, the father has became through the years a good friend of mine. I have helped his oldest daughter, Nathalie, to set these past years a total of 8 IGFA world records (not sure anymore of the exact number) which made her earned twice the number one rank in the IGFA TOP 10 in her category. I guided her youngest sister, Courtney, to a Small Fry world record for the catch of a nice Alligator Gar.

Dave’s family, composed nowadays of his new partner Stephanie, and of 4 young kids, Jack Hibberd and Courtney Carter both 10 years old, Nathalie Carter and Thaila Hibberd both 14 years old, are currently on vacation in Thailand. They booked me recently for 5 days fishing at 3 different destinations. One of that trip various goals was for the 4 young anglers to target some of the IGFA junior world records that were either vacant or still breakable.

Though we failed catching a sharptooth catfish for the vacant record for that specie, we succeeded big time by breaking the current redtail catfish record for both the male and the female Small Fry categories (up to 10 years old), setting as well a first entry for the vacant Tambaqui record in the male Small Fry category with a 11.39 kg catch.

The young 10 years old boy, Jack Hibberd, caught 3 record fishes on his two first days fishing (20.40 kg redtail on July 30, 21.11 kg redtail on July 31, and 11.39 kg Tambaqui on July 31). The young girl, Courtney Carter, 10 years old as well, caught a 22.26 kg redtail on July 31.

Though the two oldest children did not score any record, the best catch of the trip belongs to junior female angler, Thaila Hibberd, who landed – after a tremendous tug of war for such a young person - a hard fighting 43.00 kg Siamese giant carp (catlocarpio siamensis). A catch of a lifetime that lots of UK adult carp anglers would certainly be envious of… "
