FLORIDA: monster 800 lb roughtail stingray caught!

Captain Mark "Shark" Quartiano has caught thousands of different fishes, but never anything like the 800 lb - 360 kg  deep-water stingray he landed off Miami Beach.

Captain Mark, who was fishing with some Japanese fisherman, had dropped a whole bonito tuna to the 500 feet of bottom, before long, line began to spin from his reel.

This huge fish is a roughtail stingray with the scientific name, Dasyatis centroura.
It was a rare catch for an angler and was correctly identified by George H. Burgess of the Florida Museum of Natural History.

It isn't  a common catch and it is very little know about this giant size fish. Seems it resides in deeper continental shelf waters of the U.S. East Coast from off the Carolinas south to Uruguay, and probably in the eastern Atlantic.

Most anglers don’t bottom-fish in these deeper waters so they aren’t routinely seen by that user group.

Captain Mark's crew winched the giant creature out of the water for “three or four minutes” for a photo opportunity before releasing it. It was a big female stingray and she swam away pretty quickly to the deep waters.

FLORIDA: fishing and filming huge goliath groupers

Just few weeks ago Blaktip H fishing charter has filmed and posted on YouTube a new great goliath grouper video.

Goliath groupers are the largest species of grouper in Florida and all Carribbean. This kind of fish are extremely aggressive and very hard to catch; they have so strong power that you need a very heavy tackle. They are so powerfully that can open easily a big steel hook as in this video.

They filmed some great underwater footage that taught us a lot about their feeding behavior.

CANADA: strange mystery fish caught from the deep

Fishermen in northeastern Canada just off Davis Strait caught a very strange fish, a specimen that remained a mystery to them, until Doct.Nigel Hussey, a researcher of the "Ocean Tracking Network", identified the mystery fish as Rhinochimaeridae or Long-Nosed Chimaera (Harriotta raleighana).

This mystery and very little known fishes are found in temperate and tropical seas worldwide, from 660 to 6,600 ft in depth. Rhinochimaeridae  range from 2 to 4.5 ft in maximum total length.

This strange fish can grow up to 5 ft long and have a very venomous dorsal spine.

Give alook at the video taken by researchers from the "Japan Agency for Marine Science and Technology".

JAMAICA: caught a 900 lb sunfish by hand line

A giant sunfish  of 900 plus pound was caught off Jamaica coasts of Boston Bay by Desmond Phillips and Michael Grant.

The monster fish was so bizarre looking that one of two Jamaican fishermen who caught the fish thought it was from another world.

The two fishermen hooked huge fish with hand line and after a battle that lasted nearly 2 hours, Capt. Grant was determined not to let the unusual catch get away.

At beginning they decided to try to tie it to the boat and motor to shore, but the boat could hardly progress because of the huge weight of the fish. So they decided that the sunfish had to be brought on the small boat.

The sunfish (Mola mola), can reach weights of around 5000 lb, but are harmless omnivores that feed on sea jellies and other invertebrates and small fishes.

CHINA: caught an huge 683 lb Pacific Golaith Grouper

This monster size, 683 pound - 290 kg  Pacific Golaith Grouper was recently caught by fishermen off the coast of the Spratly Islands in the China sea. Probably a world record size fish.

After bringing their catch back to shore, they sold it to a local hotel, which will presumably use the fish for food.

Seems that this particular grouper can grow upt to 1,000 pound, but average catch is only 150 pound. Still, it’s not every day that you see a fish this big. This particula grouper is also believed to be endangered, and this raises the question of whether or not keeping the fish and selling it for food is ethically correct or not.

MOZAMBIQUE: a 1,018 lb black marlin caught off Bazaruto

Stephanie Choate, only dreamed of catching a "greater" or 1,000-pound marlin or bill-fish.

She was fishing in Mozambique off Barazuro archipelago with friend Andy Moyes aboard Kevin Hodgson’s boat “Big Bob,” skippered by Jason Holtz hen the huge marlin was hooked.

Stephanie , realized that she might never get the chance in her lifetime.

Not only did Stephanie  catch her first black marlin, she landed her first grander, a 1,018-pound fish that weighed 893 pounds more than her.

Stephanie Choate with her grander; photo courtesy of Pelagic

The only reason the anglers knew it was a 1,000 plus pound fish was because the big black marlin died during the battle, allowing them to weigh the fish at the 73 foot mother-ship " QuoVadis".

All the anglers had intended to release the fish, as they usually do. But after  Stephanie  had fought the black marlin for 55 minutes, the fish became dead weight after one last major run, indicating it had expired.

It took over 25 minutes to get the huge marlin into the boat with Stephanie holding open the small tuna door while pushing down its pectoral fins as the four anglers pulled it in.

IGFA: hot catches world record Novermber 2013

This month’s IGFA Hot Catches update covers one of the most impressive achievements . In addition to potential world record carp caught in Japan and South Korea and a tropical gar caught in Costa Rica, the November  IGFA report includes bonefish, red drum, tarpon, and white marlin.

Japanese angler Hiroko Fuwa caught a 13.1 kg (28 lb 14 oz) common carp (Cyprinus carpio) while fishing Japan’s Lake Shoji on August 28th that may land her the new Female Junior record. Fuwa was fishing with a bread bait and needed 10 minutes to land her potential record carp, which was released alive after it was properly documented. The current IGFA record is 7.37 kg (16 lb 4 oz).

While casting a Mepps Spinner in Costa Rica’s Rio Frio on November 7, 2012, native Costa Rican angler Mauricio Solis Salas landed a 8.64 kg (19 lb 0 oz) tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) that could earn him the new All-Tackle record. Salas was fishing with local guide Francisco Mejias Naranjo and needed 15 minutes to land the toothy fish after hooking up. The current IGFA record is 5.18 kg (11 lb 6 oz).

Angler Phillip W. Richmond, Jr., who is currently stationed in South Korea with the US Navy, has been exploring the different fishing opportunities in his temporary home. While fishing the NakDong River from his kayak on October 4th, Richmond landed a 4.6 kg (10 lb 2 oz) predatory carp (Chanodichthys erythropterus) while casting a swimbait into the chilly waters. Richmond needed five minutes to subdue the potential All-Tackle record fish, which has never before been submitted to the IGFA.

Light tackle fly angler Thane Morgan of Amarillo, Texas, USA, may have broken the men’s 2 kg (4 lb) tippet class record for tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) – a record which has stood for more than 15 years. Fishing out of Marathon, Florida with Capt. Dustin Huff on October 6th, Morgan came tight on a 54.06 kg (119 lb 3 oz) silver king after it ate the mullet pattern fly he was casting. After a quick fight and some great boat handling, the massive tarpon was subdued. The current IGFA record stands at 21.88 kg (48 lb 4 oz).

Moroccan angler Laurent Sahyoun took advantage of the great white marlin (Kajikia albida) bite off the coast of his home country and landed what could be the new men’s 3 kg (6 lb) line class record. On September 21st, while fishing with Capt. Christian Benazeth, Sahyoun pitched a live mackerel to a large white marlin and 35 minutes later the fish was subdued. Back at the docks, the marlin weighed in at 53 kg (116 lb 13 oz) – eclipsing the existing record by nearly 15 kg (30 lb).

During a recent trip to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, Florida native Dr. Jan Forszpaniak caught and released a massive bonefish (Albula spp.) while fly fishing with local guide Itu Davey on September 7th. Forszpaniak, a skilled fly angler, needed 10 minutes to land this potential All-Tackle Length record after it ate a well-presented custom fly. The bonefish measured out to 72 cm and would tie the existing record of 71 cm, if approved.

Angler Candace Kern landed the potential new women’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet class record red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) on September 25th while fishing Port O’ Connor in her home state of Texas, USA. Kern was fishing with guide Matthew Kern and needed 10 minutes to land her 13.61 kg (30 lb) redfish after it inhaled the tarpon mouse fly she was casting. The current IGFA record is 13.38 kg (29 lb 8 oz).

Angler E. Stanton Shoemaker landed the potential new men’s 4 kg (8 lb) tippet class record red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) on October 16th while fishing Upper Laguna Madre in his home state of Texas in the United States. Shoemaker, guided by Freddy Lynch, needed an hour to best the 17.69 kg (39 lb) redfish after it ate the custom fly he presented. The current IGFA record stands at 15.64 kg (34 lb 8 oz).

THAILAND: A new alligator gar 6 lb tippet fly IGFA world record

Here a fishing report from top fishing guide Jean Francois Helias from Thailand:

"Richard Hart, a dedicated fly angler living in Orlando, Florida, has been a faithful return client of ours for years. We’ve done together numerous trips around Thailand, as well as two snakehead expeditions in the Malaysian jungle. Being the dedicated fly angler he is, he deserves the numerous various fish species catches he had on each of his past trips, including two big size giant snakehead taken on the fly in the wild which are nothing but a supreme achievement. Very few freshwater fly anglers worldwide can say they have succeeded in that particular extreme challenge.

This year, he arrived in Bangkok at the very end of August, with the intention to fish with us as much as he could, this for three months, all over the country. One of his main goals being to try breaking one of the current IGFA fly world records, and if possible one from the snakehead spp. category; the giant snakehead being one of his favorite fish targets. He got close to achieve that task for the 16lb tippet class at the beginning of October but his capture was not big enough though to retire the 5.40 kg existing record.

70 days after his arrival in Thailand (almost half of it fly fishing), after a serious amount of broken tippets and lost flies through his quest for a record, Richard’s unequalled dedication got finally rewarded with one yesterday Nov. 6, 2013. End of the afternoon at the Ratchaburi lake, he nailed on a silver deceiver an alligator gar weighing 9.81 kg on our certified scales. It took him 30 minutes to tame that toothy predator on a light 6 lb Rio tippet, on a G.Loomis Streamdance 6 wt Cross Current coupled with a big size Tibor Billy Pate Tarpon (so he could have plenty of backing to play any big fish).

Speaking about Tibor reels, for the anecdote Richard is like me an unconditional Tibor reels fan. We both love and respect the Ted Juracsik family with whom we have a great relationship, and who have kindly supported us. Big up Ted and Marianne! The only difference between Richard and I when it comes to fly rods is he uses both brands G.Loomis and Sage. I personally use exclusively the Sage fly rods!

Once homologated, that 9.81 kg Alligator Gar catch will retire the current 7.28 kg record which is held ….by yours truly. As a pro guide, there is nothing as pleasing to me than having the clients whom I’m guiding breaking my own records. I feel very good about it for having done a good job.

It is the second IGFA world record for Richard Hart, who previously held the all tackle record for the eye-spot barb (hampala dispar). A record catch on conventional gear which I also guided him to, in the wild in the northeast of Thailand. He is returning to the USA at the end of November. Until then, he still has many more days fishing with us this month. Who knows? With a bit of luck, he may get a hat trick of records which I truly feel he would deserve big time for all the efforts he is putting in his fishing quest."
