USA: rare big opah caught off Newport Beach

This week, a rare catch of an opah of around 120 lb  -55 kg was made aboard the vassel "Western Pride" (www.daveyslocker.com) in Newport Beach in  Southern California .

Capt. Jeff Patrick caught this strange and mysterious fish from a depth of about 150 feet during a day rockfishing trip.

The opah was caught during the night when took a sardine and was initially thought to be a thresher shark.

Opah catches are extremely unusual. They're caught incidentally by longliners in tropical and temperate seas around the world.
