IGFA: December 2012 hot catches
Brazilian angler Luana Pigatto was casting a Marine Sports top water plug in Rio Tapajos, Brazil on September 24th when a mirianae peacock (Cichla mirianae) crushed her lure. Using 15 kg (30 lb) tackle, Luana needed almost 10 minutes to subdue this 6.12 kg (13 lb 8 oz) fish, which was quickly released after it was properly documented. With the current record for this species standing at 4.08 kg (9 lb 0 oz), Luana could potentially be the new All-Tackle record holder if her catch is approved by the IGFA World Records committee.
IGFA Representative Bo Nelson landed a beautiful bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) while fishing in Fernie, Canada on August 17th with guide Kim Sedrovic. Nelson’s fish ate a custom artificle lure and put up a 35 minute fight. Tipping the scales at 6.12 kg (13 lb 8 oz), Nelson’s catch is heavy enough to replace his existing 4 kg (8 lb) line class record which stands at 6.01 kg (13 lb 4 oz). Nelson released this potential record fish after it had been properly documented.
Matthew Poldy of Oak Hill, Virginia, USA landed a 10.66 kg (23 lb 8 oz) black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) while fishing off Key West, Florida, USA on November 21st with Capt. Donald Poldy. Matthew, age 10, needed six minutes to subdue his grouper after it ate his live bait. With the existing record at 7.94 kg (17 lb 8 oz), Matthew’s catch qualifies him for the potential new Male Smallfry record.
Italian angler Luciana Gerardi was fishing with Capt. Alfonso Crispo off Porto Ottilou, Italy on November 3rd when the live squid she was trolling was inhaled by a 9.53 kg (21 lb 0 oz) dentex (Dentex dentex). After Gerardi’s hooking the fish, the experienced angler needed almost an hour to land her potential new women’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class record, which would tie the existing record that stands at 9.5 kg (20 lb 15 oz).

ECUADOR: Galapagos Marlin Report
The season has started and seas have calmed down considerably around the island of San Cristobal. Water temperature close to the island on the SW side still remains a chilling 67/68 F. Offshore around Rosa Blanca water has held 71/72 F. 88 bank 68 miles Northeast of the port of San Cristobal is a bit warmer with 74 F. Water has been dark blue everywhere we fished and the presence of bait and life was very encouraging. Tunas were a pest everyday just about.
This time we had the pleasure of fishing with Andy Helms and his wife Jillian Kus. They chose Galapagos as their honeymoon destination.
On their first day in Galapagos they took a tour to snorkel with sea lions, sharks and turtles around Kicker Rock and Lobos's island. The next day Dec 17, 2012 the fishing began. Onboard the Jhonamar 2 the newly weds headed for Rosa Blanca to try their luck at marlin. The seas were a calm 3 foot. Bait, dolphins and tuna were seen working around the honey hole. A jumping striped marlin put on a show but the marlin remained absent from the spread for the day. Conditions were wonderful but the marlin did not want to play. Several big eye tuna were caught around 30# and when the couple had enough it was time to focus on marlin. The day went without any marlin raises but the tuna made for a wonderful dinner
Day 2 took Andy and his lovely wife Northeast to 88 Bank. As soon as lines went into the water bites from pesky tunas were frequent and not long into the troll did a stripey come up to chase a bait but did not eat. Tunas were a nuisance and again they caught multiple tunas from double and triple hook ups on the circle hooks. Eventually they had to troll all teaser until the tunas would go away. 5 stripeys were raised with 2 bites and 2 releases of on fish around 170# and a second fish around 130#. They were very vivid fish showing lots of flash on the tease and bite. Plenty of bait and several surface feeding stripeys were seen during the day. A large dorado around 50# plus came to chase a teaser as well.Dec 19 and final day of the Helm's trip took the on the Jhonamar 2 all the way to 88 Bank again. Seas were a bit choppier as the wind had picked up but it was not bad at all. The crew was not done putting lines out when a triple header of tunas hooked up. As soon as baits went back in tuna would hook up. This pretty much went all day and over a dozen tunas were caught and many more released. It was almost impossible to keep baits in the water. The fish averaged 15 to 25#. Only one marlin which looked like a blue came into the spread. A group of 5 tailing stripeys was seen late in the day but they had no interest in coming into the spread. We knew there were more marlin that we weren't seeing but they would not play today. Lots of bait on the bank

USA: Delaware huge striped bass state record
Delaware has a new state record big striped bass; accordin with the Cape Gazette an huge fish of 52-pounder was caught by angler Ben Smith of Bryn Mar that beat the existing record by eight ounces.
The weight of this bif fish was certified was measured and weighed using a certified scale at "Old Inlet Bait & Tackle" in Rehoboth Beach and verified by DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section.
The former state record was of 51 lb and 8 oz had been in place since 1978.
Smith caught the striped bass while surf fishing at Delaware Seashore State Park. The fish measured 129 centimetres - 51 inches long and 76.2 cm - 30 inches in girth.
Clark Evans, a surf fishing instructor, described the challenges Smith faced in landing the record bass. “A striper is known for putting on a big first run, and surviving that first run was the first hurdle,” Evans said. Using the right equipment including a circle hook and fray-resistant braided line instead of more fragile monofilament helped Smith’s battle considerably, especially in the final struggle to wrestle the fish out of the surf. “He did everything right, and even then the odds were stacked against him. I told him, ‘That’s one in a million,’” Evans said.

ECUADOR: Salinas marlin report
A recent marlin fishing report in Salinas from Ecuagringo: "The marlin fishing has begun in most of Ecuador. Marlin are caught in most destinations of Ecuador all year. However, December to May tends to bring marlin to every location they are fished for in Ecuador. The water from Esmeraldas to the border with Peru has warmed up to an average 75 F. Galapagos is till considerably cooler with water averaging 72 F.
Clear blue water has been pushing towards the coast of Ecuador bringing lots of big wahoo ranging from 60 to some plus 100lbs. The weather is nice, not too hot yet and conditions are looking to bring a fantastic season.
Warming water and excellent clarity have brought wahoo and plenty of striped marlin for the last 3 weeks now up to 20 miles offshore. Some boats reported on Dec 8 and 9 up to over a dozen tailers sighted and most boats raised 2 to 5 stripeys in their spread. Several boat reported multiple wahoo catches with one boat catching 16 and loosing another equal amount. Both Saturday and Sunday had reports of dorado, wahoo and striped marlin with one boat loosing a blue estimated around 500lb.

ECUADOR: Ecuagringo marlin fishing report
A report from Ecuagringo regarding fishing in San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands
"The sunny days and warmer weather have arrived. Usually a great indication that marlin season has arrived. With a fresh new report from Captain Yuri Gutierrez from Santa Cruz island we kick off December in great style. Captain Gutierrez reported fishing Dec 1 and 2, 2012 with clients from Spain Bank 0-30 between Santa Cruz and Cristobal. MEXICO: monster 445 plus lb yellowfin tuna caught
John's tuna required 5 gaffs just to steer it to the tuna gate, and it barely fit through the gate.
John Petruescu was fishing with a live skipjack tuna to entice a yellowfin tuna. I've been told by someone closely associated with the boat, however, that this is a very conservative round number, and that the actual weight of the behemoth probably is much heavier.
The current International Game Fish Assn. all-tackle world record is a 405 lb yellowfin caught two years ago (2010) by angler Mike Livingston aboard the "Vagabond "off Magdalena Bay, in Mexico.
Two months ago angler Guy Yocom caught a yellowfin weighing 427.5 pounds while fishing out of Cabo San Lucas on Baja California's tip. This mammoth yellowfin tuna has yet to be approved by the IGFA as an all-tackle record.
Using a measurement formula used by crew members on boats while they're still at sea, and the technique is generally pretty reliable. But the "400 - 430 pounds" figure appears to have been thrown out merely as a round number.
UPDATE: back at the dock the big tuna was exactly 445 pound!!

IGFA: Hot Catches News November
Here the last IGFA Hot Catches News of November:
Angler Thomas Olivo traveled from his home inBozeman ,
Montana , USA
to experience the legendary fall salmon run in the appropriately named Salmon
River, just outside of Pulaski ,
New York , USA .
While casting a black streamer fly on September 19th, Olivo hooked into a
beautiful coho salmon (Oncorhynchuskisutch)
that took him 20 minutes to land. Before the fish was safely released to swim
another day, it tipped Olivo’s portable scale at a whopping 15.42 kg (34 lb 0
oz). Olivio’s catch potentially qualifies him for both the new All-Tackle
record, which stands at 15.08 kg (33 lb 4 oz), as well as the 8 kg (16 lb)
tippet class record, which is currently 9.75 kg (21 lb 8 oz). In the record
application review process, the IGFA will be working with ichthyologists to
ensure this catch is properly identified as a pure coho, rather than a
coho-Chinook hybrid.
Angler Esteban Blanco Morales landed this unique species, a giant hawkfish (Cirrhitusrivulatus), while casting a diving plug offCuajiniquil ,
Costa Rica on
March 24, 2012. After a quick three minute fight, Morales had the fish boated
and was on his way back to the docks to weigh and identify his mystery catch.
Back at the docks, the fish weighed in at 4.3 kg (9 lb 7 oz), which qualifies
him for the potential new All-Tackle record. The current IGFA record stands at
4.16 kg (9 lb 3 oz).
Female angler Isabel Sola Martinez, was fishing her home town of Guayaquil, Ecuador on October 28, 2012 when she landed a 5.67 kg (12 lb 8 oz) Pacific snook (Centropomus spp.) while casting a live shrimp on a jig. Isabel landed her potential women’s 24 kg (50 lb) line class record in five minutes, and released the fish alive after a quick weighing. The current IGFA record is 2.04 kg (4 lb 8 oz).
Angler Dotty Ballantyne, ofBozeman , Montana , USA ,

Louisiana , USA
to experience the legendary fall red drum (Sciaenopsocellatus)
bite. While casting a custom shrimp fly on November 9, 2012 with Capt. David Mangum, Ballantyne landed
a redfish that took her 15 minutes to subdue. The fish weighed in at 12.7 kg
(28 lb 0 oz) and was released alive. Ballantyne’s catch qualifies her for the
potential new women’s 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record, as the existing record
stands at 12.02 kg (26 lb 8 oz).
On August 14, 2012, British angler Sarah Elizabeth McLean, landed a 114 kg (251 lb 5 oz) Atlantic bigeye tuna (Thunnusobesus) while fishing with Capt. David Abreu out ofFunchal ,
Portugal . McLean ’s fish ate a trolled Draggin Eyes Abalone Head
lure, and put up a tough fight that lasted two hours and 40 minutes. This catch
qualifies McLean for the potential new
Female-Junior record, with the current record standing at 53.98 kg (119 lb 0
oz)
