Angler Evan Johnson while fishing on the Upper Waitaki hydro canals landed and huge brown trout, surely one of the biggest ever landed in all the world. This mammoth brown trout was 39.7 pound - 18 kilos. This giant brown trout catch follows other monster canal fishes; a 37,4 pound (17 kilos) rainbow trout caught by American Mike Was in late2002 and a 38,5 pound (17.5kilo) rainbow landed the following year by Tony Washington.
In recent years fish over 35+ pound (14 - 15kilos) have been recorded, with fish weights in double figures not so uncommon here in New Zealand.
