When Randie Lieneke watched a friend pull a 93-pound blue catfish out of the Missouri River several years ago, he made a simple goal.
“I’m going to catch one bigger,” he said.
In early October, that goal was met. Using a trotline baited with large shad, Lieneke caught a 95-pound blue cat near Wellington, Mo., where he lives.
That exceeded the 81-pound blue cat he and friends caught this year during the flood.
“The Missouri still has lots of big catfish,” said Lieneke, 53. “We catch a lot of fish weighing from 50 to 60 pounds.
“But when you get up over 80 pounds, that’s still a rare fish.”
