WORLD RECORDS: hot catches July 2017

South African angler Tristan Schrieber – age 16 – caught this 35.8 kg (78 lb 14 oz) narrowbarred mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) on May 5th which may become the new Male Junior world record. Schrieber was fishing out of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when the massive mackerel hit the live maasbanker (goggle eye/jack mackerel) he was slow-trolling behind the Wattu, captained by PJ Botha. Schrieber needed approximately 20 minutes to bring the fish to gaff on the 10 kg (20 lb) gear he was using. The current IGFA world record is 31.8 kg (70 lb 1 oz).

British angler Greg Iszatt potentially set the new All-Tackle world record for golden mahseer (Tor putitora) with this 29.93 kg (66 lb) fish that he caught on June 14th while fishing the Mahakali River in India. Iszatt was fishing the fast-moving river using trout for bait, and needed 25 minutes to land the massive mahseer. Once subdued, the fish was quickly documented, weighed in a sling, and released alive. The current IGFA world record is 19.96 kg (44 lb).

Kiwi angler Sam Yendell – age 16 - caught this incredible 212.4 kg (468 lb 3 oz) swordfish (Xiphas gladius) on July 8th while fishing off Tutukaka, New Zealand. Fishing with 60 kg (130 lb) gear, Yendell needed one hour to land the swordfish after it ate the squid he was using for bait. If approved, the broadbill will earn Yendell the new Male Junior world record, which currently stands at 177.6 kg (391 lb 8 oz).
