WORLD RECORDS: hot catches of October 2014

Angler Kelvin Ng recently traveled from his home in Singapore to target the majestic taimen (Hucho taimen) in remote sections of Mongolia. During his trip, Ng caught a 104 cm beauty that could earn him the new All-Tackle Length record. Ng caught and released his fish on August 22nd, while fly fishing Mongolia’s Delgermoron River. The taimen ate an olive and black streamer fly and put up a tough 15 minute fight, before it could be subdued, documented, and released alive. The current IGFA record is 80 cm.

Canada’s Great Bear Lake, located in the Northwest Territories, is notorious for producing world record class lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). Angler Michael Sadar experienced this first hand on August 21st, when he caught and released an enormous 108 cm laker that could potentially earn him the new All-Tackle Length record. After the fish crushed the chartreuse tube he was trolling, Sadar needed 15 minutes to subdue the trophy trout. Once boated, the fish was quickly measured, photographed, and released alive. The current IGFA record is 99 cm.

On September 17th, angler Candace Kern caught and released a beautiful 17.69 kg (39 lb) red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) that could potentially earn her the new women’s 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record. Kern needed only 15 minutes to land the trophy redfish after it ate the black/purple fly she presented to the fish in the waters off Port Aransas, Texas, USA. The current IGFA record is 15.2 kg (33 lb 8 oz).
